Ripley County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 26,523. The county's county seat is Versailles, Indiana6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,160 km˛ (448 mi˛). 1,156 km˛ (446 mi˛) of it is land and 4 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.35% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 26,523 people, 9,842 households, and 7,273 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km˛ (59/mi˛). There are 10,482 housing units at an average density of 9/km˛ (24/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.30% White, 0.05% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 9,842 households out of which 36.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.30% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.10% are non-families. 22.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.13.


In the county the population is spread out with 28.10% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.00 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $41,426, and the median income for a family is $47,019. Males have a median income of $34,055 versus $23,610 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,559. 7.50% of the population and 6.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.00% of those under the age of 18 and 8.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
