History

Ripon, originally known as Murphy's Ferry, was named for Ripon, Wisconsin.

Ripon is located at 37°44'26" North, 121°7'42" West (37.740478, -121.128224)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.8 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.68% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,146 people, 3,368 households, and 2,680 families residing in the city. The population density is 955.5/km² (2,473.5/mi²). There are 3,446 housing units at an average density of 324.5/km² (840.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 84.52% White, 0.34% African American, 0.61% Native American, 1.51% Asian, 0.28% Pacific Islander, 8.80% from other races, and 3.94% from two or more races. 18.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,368 households out of which 45.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.1% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% are non-families. 16.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.37.


In the city the population is spread out with 32.0% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $56,979, and the median income for a family is $62,592. Males have a median income of $47,377 versus $25,389 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,978. 6.2% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.2% of those under the age of 18 and 11.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Story of the History of Ripon (3117 words)
The City of Ripon, originally known as Murphy's Ferry, was one of several river crossings that sprang up in 1850 to carry gold seekers and settlers to and from the Stanislaus River.
In 1925, the Ripon Sanitary District was formed by purchasing 45 acres of sewer disposal land near the Stanislaus River, south of town, with a $30,000 bond issue.
The City of Ripon was incorporated in 1945, with the Chamber of Commerce as the leading sponsor and financial backer.
