Because of a clause in the transfer contract with Barcelona, Villarreal had to pay one million euros to the Catalan club. Riquelme also provides a helpful discussion of the book's often-overlooked subtitle, "A Pure Woman," and introduces his reading of what he characterizes as the novel's "echoic" language, which he explores at greater length in his Deconstructive essay, included among the other readings of the novel that comprise the final third of this edition.
Riquelme locates instances of echoic language throughout the novel to show how Hardy's development of plot proceeds from his moves in language, his subtle shifts from one word or sound to another, by way of which one's experience, too, shifts in some subtle yet significant way.
Riquelme returns to another idea first mentioned in his Introduction to discuss Hardy's frequent description of Tess's speech as a "murmur," and he links that term to what Julia Kristeva calls "echolalia," a tactic carried over from childhood as a means for "[challenging] the conventional structures of adult understanding, including grammar and logic" (511).
