Risca (Welsh: Rhisga) is a town of approximately 20,000 people in south Wales. It is part of the Newport conurbation with a population of 160,000. It lies at the south-eastern edge of the South Wales Coalfield, and a mine used to operate in the town. It is home to Ty-Sign, which is a large housing estate which has a leisure centre, shops and skate park. It has a rural aspect, and is surrounded to the east and west by several extensively-wooded hills including Mynydd Machen (1,188ft/362m) and Twmbarlwm (1,375ft/419m) which attract tourists and mountain bikers to Cwmcarn Forest Drive. The parish of Risca lies in the Ebbw valley, between Mynydd Maen, its highest point being Twmn Barlwm hill with its Iron Age hill fort and motte, visible from miles away, and the parish of Henllys to the east, and Mynydd Machen, with a television repeater mast, in the parish of Machen to the west.
Risca adjoins parishes of Bassaleg to the south and Mynyddislwyn to the north.
Risca was in the Hundred of Wentloog, the rural deanery of Newport, the archdeaconry of Monmouth and the diocese of Llandaff.
New Risca Pit (2140 words)
Situated several hundreds of yards northwest of the Risca Black Vein Colliery and on the opposite side of the valley to the Rockvein Colliery, near the junction of the Ebbw and Sirhowy Valleys.
The Colliery bears the name of the Risca New Pit, and it was worked by two shafts, each being 285 yards deep and 17 feet six inches in diameter.
Having lived in Risca 40 years, and seen the results of many explosions, I have never seen such mangling of bodies, limbs twisted from their sockets, legs fractured – not from falls, they seem to have been affected by several currents of whirlwinds.
