Encyclopedia > River Gipping

The River Gipping is the source river for the River Orwell in the county of Suffolk in East Anglia, England. It is an improved 15 mile long river navigation with 15 locks between Ipswich and Stowmarket. The navigation was established by two Acts of Parliament in 1790 and 1793.

Stowmarket Official Guide (295 words)
At the geographical heart of rural Suffolk and on the River Gipping, lies the Town of Stowmarket.
The Town is situated some 12 miles North West of Ipswich and 14 miles South East of Bury St. Edmunds and therefore it occupies a strategic location in the centre of the county of Suffolk on the A14 road from the Midlands and the North to the Euro-Port of Felixstowe.
River traffic inevitably declined after the coming of the railways in 1846 and the Gipping Navigation was closed by an Act of Parliament in 1932.

These tiny rivers are not to be overlooked by the budding river carper, and will often throw up a surprise or two, to those willing to do their homework.
