Riverdale Park is a town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,690.

Geography

Riverdale Park is located at 38°57'46" North, 76°55'47" West (38.962810, -76.929699)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 km˛ (1.6 mi˛). 4.1 km˛ (1.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.45% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,690 people, 2,172 households, and 1,437 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,624.5/km˛ (4,212.7/mi˛). There are 2,321 housing units at an average density of 563.6/km˛ (1,461.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 39.91% White, 38.51% African American, 0.49% Native American, 4.25% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 12.99% from other races, and 3.74% from two or more races. 28.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,172 households out of which 38.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% are married couples living together, 16.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.06 and the average family size is 3.60.


In the town the population is spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 12.2% from 18 to 24, 38.7% from 25 to 44, 15.6% from 45 to 64, and 4.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 110.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 109.3 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $44,041, and the median income for a family is $49,904. Males have a median income of $30,053 versus $30,200 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,293. 12.0% of the population and 9.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


History

The town was incorporated in 1920 as Riverdale, drawing the name from Riversdale, the plantation owned by the Calvert family that is at the center of the town.


In a referendum held August 8, 1998 it was voted to rename the town to Riverdale Park, effective September 7, 1998. The United States Postal Service, however, still refers to the town by its older name. The ZIP Code assigned to the Riverdale post office is 20737.


Government

The Mayor of Riverdale Park is Guy Tiberio. He serves on the Town Council together with six council members elected by wards.

On March 6, 1856, the University of Maryland was chartered as the Maryland Agricultural College (MAC).
In 1997, the Maryland General Assembly passed legislation allowing the University of Maryland, College Park to be known simply as the University of Maryland, recognizing the campus's role as the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland.
For the above historical reasons, the University of Maryland, Baltimore is also sometimes called "University of Maryland." This is not a significant point of confusion, as UMB is limited to graduate professional education.
