Riverside is a town located in St. Clair County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 1,564.

Riverside is located at 33°36'52" North, 86°12'2" West (33.614465, -86.200678)1.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 27.4 km² (10.6 mi²). 23.2 km² (8.9 mi²) of it is land and 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.42% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,564 people, 663 households, and 464 families residing in the town. The population density is 67.5/km² (174.8/mi²). There are 793 housing units at an average density of 34.2/km² (88.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.10% White, 12.40% Black or African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 663 households out of which 29.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.7% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.83.


In the town the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $34,813, and the median income for a family is $43,456. Males have a median income of $32,604 versus $21,920 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,932. 12.5% of the population and 10.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.0% of those under the age of 18 and 12.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
