Currently Romania has the smallest motorway network from all the European Union' s members or ascending members, with only 239 km in use, as of November 2006. This is because during the communist period (before 1989) the railway, aerian and naval transport was privileged, with little investment being made in the road network. After 1989 the situation continued and no notable progress has been made. However, in recent years a master plan for the national motorway network has been developed, many construction sites has been opened all around the country and the actual situation is about to change in the next 5 to 7 years.


There are no tolls for using the motorways in Romania, except the sections containing bridges over Danube: on A2 at Cernavodă and on the DN2A road at Vadu Oii. Nevertheless every car that uses a motorway(A) or a national road (DN) in Romania must wear a sticker called rovignetă on the windscreen; the sticker can be bought at the main gas stations.
