As the guitarist, singer and songwriter in Thrush Hermit, Benvie gained notoriety among his peers in the indie scene. Thrush Hermit also included Joel Plaskett, Ian McGettigan and Cliff Gibb. Touring extensively through Canada, Thrush Hermit released two EPs on Sloan's Murderecords, Smart Bomb and Great Pacific Ocean. They signed to the American label Elektra Records and released their full length Sweet Homewrecker. It wasn't until 1999 when Thrush Hermit released Clayton Park on Sonic Unyon that they made a splash on the scene. Joel Plaskett is a Canadian rock musician. ... After the break up of Thrush Hermit, Benvie wrote and produce his own solo work as Tigre Benvie. He has released two albums as Tigre Benvie, Year of the Mutt and Bankruptcy. He moved to montreal to pursue litterature studies at Concordia University. There he joined The Dears as a guitar player and participated in the recording of their No Cities Left album.


Benvie left The Dears and Montreal for Toronto to work on his novel and record with McGettigan under the band name Camouflage Nights.


His first novel, Safety of War, was published in 2004 by Coach House Books. Coach House Press is an independent press located in Toronto, Canada. ...

However, when you factor in Benvie's songwriting capabilities, which are greatly evident in the Thrush Hermit catalogue, it's not such a far fetched cry to find myself with a copy of his first novel, Safety of War.
Benvie's poetic writing is so subtle, that until you read that last sentence, you don't realize how much he really has packed into this book for you to think about.
Although Benvie continues in his the musical side of his career, I hope that this is only the appetizer of what is to come from him as an author.
