After several years on the London stage, Coote set his attention on Hollywood where he appeared in supporting roles in many films. Coote's acting was inturrupted when he served as a squadron leader in the Canadian Air Force during World War II. In 1956, Coote was cast as Col. Pickering in the Broadway musical, "My Fair Lady."
