Croft has fallen in and out with the selectors, and when he was dropped in 2000, he huffily declared he'd had enough anyway.
Croft tried to reinvent himself in 2000, but his new variations proved to be no more than gimmicks.
Croft has led by example on and off the pitch and his appointment as captain has not diminished his consistent form with both bat and ball, having taken 122 wickets and scored 1451 runs in the last two championship campaigns.
Croft had enough standing to be elected for Carmarthenshire, but he may have derived additional support from his connexion with Gelly Meyrick, the Earl of Essex's steward, who was trying to build up a parliamentary interest for his master at the time of the elections to the 1589 Parliament.
Croft is not mentioned by name in the journals of this Parliament but, as a knight of the shire, he was appointed to the subsidy committee (11 Feb).
In the next county election, Croft was ousted by the Conningsbys, with whom he had pursued an often violent vendetta for many years, and as great a personage as the Earl of Essex failed to persuade even a Herefordshire borough to return him.
