Robert James Lindsay (VC, KCB) was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.


He was later Colonel Sir Robert James Loyd-Lindsay, Baron Wantage of Lockinge, 1832-1901, a notable benefactor to Wantage and one of the founders of the English Red Cross Society.

He was 22 years old, and a Captain in the Scots (Fusilier) Guards, British Army during the Crimean War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.


On 20 September 1854 at the Battle of the Alma, Crimea, Captain Lindsay, with a group of other officers, rallied a party of NCOs and men round the Colours and they held their ground against an overwhelming force. On 5 November at Inkerman, Captain Lindsay, with a few men, charged a large party of Russians, driving them back and killing one of them himself.

Robert James Lindsay (1832-1901), born 16 April 1832 at Balcarres, Scotland, the youngest child of General James and Anne (nee Trotter) Lindsay.
Robert Loyd-Lindsay maintained a lively interest in military matters and, at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, he took urgent steps to found the National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War which later became the British Red Cross Society.
