Robert Siodmak (August 8, 1900 - March 10, 1973) was a film director born in Memphis, Tennessee (sometimes his birthplace is stated as Dresden, Germany). He emigrated, with his family, to Germany at age one. He worked as a stage director and a banker before becoming editor and scenarist for Kurt Bernhardt in 1925. With the rise of Nazism he left Germany for Paris and in 1940 Paris for Hollywood. In Hollywood he was always an assignment director, but managed to bring the influence of German cinema to his projects and direct some great film noir. Of his film-noir output The Killers (1946) is regarded as one of the best of this American film style. He returned to Germany in the 1950s. Siodmak was born to a Jewish family in Dresden, Germany (the myth of his American birth in Memphis, Tennessee was necessary for him to obtain a visa in Paris).
Siodmak arrived in Hollywood in 1939, where he made 23 movies, many of them widely popular thrillers and crime melodramas, which critics regard today as classics of film noir.
Siodmak was awarded $100,000, but no screen credit.
Celebrated as a hallmark of neo-realist and avant-garde filmmaking, the film was based on Curt's own story, and co-directed by RobertSiodmak and Edgar G. Ulmer, with a script by Billy Wilder and Fred Zinnemann behind the camera.
Siodmak's science-fiction novel Donovan's Brain (1943) was an international bestseller and adapted for the screen many times.
Though often eclipsed by the fame of his older brother, Curt Siodmak was perhaps the more talented and original of the two artists.
