Robert Troup was born in 1757 in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. He read law and attended King's College in 1774. He reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Continental Army serving from 1776 to 1780. He was an aide to General Horatio Gates and participated in the Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga on October 17, 1777.
