Rocky Long was the starting quarterback for the University of New Mexico Lobo football team from 1969 to 1971, recording consecutive winning seasons and earning player-of-the-year honors in the Western Athletic Conference in 1971. The quarterback is a position in the offensive backfield of American and Canadian football, directly behind players of the line. He is generally the leader of the offensive team when it is on the field, responsible for initiating play by receiving the snap of the ball from the center. ... Long returned to UNM as head football coach on December 20, 1997. His overall won-loss record through the 2004 season is 40-45, including 28-22 since 2001, the best four-year stretch for Lobo football in over forty years. Long has led the Lobos to three straight post-season bowl games (2003-05) for the first time in school history. He has yet to gain a bowl win as Lobo coach. Long's defense was superior the entire 1997 season, finishing second in the nation in turnover margin (+20), 15th in rushing defense (108.3 ypg), 15th in pass efficiency defense (103.84 rating) and 33rd in scoring defense (20.4 ppg).
Long's 1996 Bruin defense finished third in the Pac-10 and was ranked 23rd in the nation against the run.
