RWJF - Grant Results (2853 words)
Rohrbach had put herself through school with the money from her transcription business and ceramics classes, but she gave up both now and went to work as a critical care nurse for newborns at her local hospital.
Nevertheless, Rohrbach decided that middle-class, well-educated new mothers at the hospital where she worked would be willing to pay for a for-profit service that sent nurses into their homes after they gave birth, to examine their new babies and make sure problems were not developing.
Rohrbach was able to put these new skills to good use in 2001, when she was given a special award by First Lady Laura Bush, and was invited to the White House at Christmas.
