Rokuhara Tandai (六波羅探題) was the name for the chieves of the Kamakura shogunate in Kyoto whose agency kept responsibility for security in Kinai and judicial affairs on western Japan, and negotiated with the imperial court.
Rokuhara Tandai was set up after the Jokyu Incident in 1221. The two chieves were called Kitakata (北方) and Minamikata (南方). Kitakata was higher-ranking than Minamikata. Like shikken and rensho, both posts were monopolized by the Hojo clan. The agency was destroyed with the fall of Kamakura shogunate in 1333.
In 1318, upon the abdication of the Jimyōin-tō Emperor Hanazono (his second cousin), Emperor Go-Daigo became emperor at the age of 29, in the prime of his life.
In 1324, with the discovery of Emperor Go-Daigo's plans to overthrow the Kamakura Shogunate, the RokuharaTandai disposed of his close associate Hino Suketomo in the Shōchū Incident.
Ashikaga Takauji, who had been sent by the Bakufu to find and destroy this army, sided with the Emperor and captured the RokuharaTandai.
