As of 2003 the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco covers the city and county of San Francisco, as well as Marin and San Mateo counties, California.


The Archbishop of San Francisco is also the metropolitan bishop of the San Francisco Province, which covers Northern California, Nevada, Utah, and Hawaii. The suffragan dioceses of the province include Honolulu, Las Vegas, Oakland, Reno, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Jose in California, Santa Rosa in California, and Stockton.


The Archdiocese of San Francisco was erected on July 29, 1853.
