Etymology

Roorkee is said to derive its name from Ruri, the wife of a Rajput chieftain. It was the capital of Pargana during the time of Akbar as is referred in [[Ain-e-Akbari], authored by Abul Fazal]. In the early days, Roorkee was a mere mud built village on the banks of hill torrent, named Solani. This article needs additional references or sources for verification. ...

As of 2001 India census[1], Roorkee had a population of 97,064. Males constituted 53% of the population and females 47%. Roorkee has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 64%: male literacy is 92%, and female literacy is 72%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. Importance

Roorkee has a history of being first in numerous things. It had the first engineering college in Asia (and in the British Empire outside Great Britain) established in 1847; India's first rail locomotive ran here on December 22 1846; India's first aqueduct was constructed here over the Sonali river.


This city is also famous for the shrine of sufi saint Alauddin Sabir Kaliyari, also known as Hazrat Sabir Pak, which is situated in Piran Kaliyar town, where an annual spiritual fair (Urs) is held in his honour.


Roorkee is best known for Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (formerly known as University of Roorkee and originally the highly reputed Thomason College of Civil Engineering). It is also a home to government research institutes - Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Irrigation Research Institute (IRI), Irrigation Design Organization (IDO) and National Institute of Hydrology (NIH [1]). So great was Roorkee's reputation that the reputed Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh started its operations from one room in the main building of Erstwhile Thomason College in 1947 and was latershifted to its present premises in Chandigarh. Also the world famous Indian Institute of Science (IISc. Bangalore) was first planned to be established at Roorkee but eventually was set up in Bangalore. It also has a large army base with headquarters for Bengal Engineering Group and Center (BEG & C, also known as Bengal Sappers), established in 1803.


Roorkee is located 32 kms from the holy city of Haridwar.


India's first locomotive engine named Mary Lind ran in Roorkee in 1846. The railway line was built to carry soil used for the construction of the upper Ganga canal aqueduct. Later, this aqueduct was used to construct India's first Hydraulic Power House (operational 1930) at Pathri. Remains of this power house can still be seen at Pathri, Bahadrabad and Roorkee; and the locomotive rail paths are still intact.


Roorkee is also a well known center of education. With the numerous schools, places for higher education and professional degrees, students come from various places from all over India and abroad.
