Founded in the 1920s, Roosevelt continues to be one of the largest schools in the greater Seattle area. The school offers a wide variety of academic courses as well as extracurricular activities. In a yearlong series of reports on RHS, NPR described it as "an above-average school in a below-average school district."[1] The school is named after Theodore Roosevelt; the school's team, the Rough Riders, is named after Roosevelt's famous military regiment. The school was remodeled from 2004 to 2006, during which classes were held in Lincoln High School. The building was seismically retrofitted and modernized, and many of the school's beautiful architectural elements were preserved. This article does not cite any references or sources. ...

In 2006, students and their teachers designed a robot to fly in a weightless environment. When a sensor on the spherical robot perceives a beam of infrared light, it stops its rotation and, with the force caused by a set of motors spinning heavy flywheels, rotates the "front" to face the source of light.[1] [2] FIRST Logo FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is an organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen in 1989 in order to develop ways to inspire students in engineering and technology fields. ...

Founded in the fall of 2000 by "The Dons," the tradition of the XC MOB has been carried through to recent generations. "The Dons" were a tightly knit group of dedicated athletes consisting of Graham Lierly, Bjorn Fredrickson, Justin McConachie, Ryan Delaney, Eric Sorensen, Yared Ayele, Kyle Norgard, and Robert "Bart" Batholomew. Through their work and dedication to the XC MOB, they brought the first ever men's KingCo title to Roosevelt High School in 2001, and went on the place 7th at the Washington State XC Championships. In recent years, the Roosevelt XC MOB has continued to excel. The most recent KingCo championship title was won with the help of the Berhe brothers. As a freshman, Abraham Berhe managed to cross the finish line ahead of all other freshman and sophomores at the Washington State XC Championships in Pasco. Football The Roosevelt football team had struggled in the recent decade after they jumped to the KingCo4A athletic level. The team has shown steady improvement since coach Jeff Ware took the reins, and his coaching along with the best facilities in the district will nourish its potential in the upcoming season. With turnouts for football numbering at around 90, a victory over rival Ballard, the JV and freshman teams both posting impressive records, and unprecedented team W-L records at the KingCo4A level, the future looks bright for "Rider Ball." With a new football field, top-of-the-line weight training room, an excellent weight/conditioning trainer (Matthew Katinas) and with the most determination a Roosevelt High School football team has ever had, a change in the rankings might happen next season in the KingCo4A level, a change that can improve Roosevelt football for the years to come. Heading into the 2007 football season, hopes are higher than ever for the first winning season with a possible playoff run for the Rough Riders. Lead by the seniors of 2008, who have been playing together for quite some time now and improved in leadership, determination, aggressiveness and willingness, the Riders can make a comeback with the help of its outstanding underclassmen and hopefully with the help of their soon-to-be-excited Rider fans that no team from the Eastside can ever expect...except for the Lake Washington Kangs who lost against the Riders in the last game of the regular season 24-14.
Baseball The Roosevelt Baseball Club has struggled in recent years since their move to KingCo4A. The 2007 season saw the Roughriders go 3-17, with two of those victories coming over the lowly Franklin High School. In 2006, the Riders needed to win only one of their last three games, but managed to lose all three and miss the playoffs. The 2008 season looks promising, with returning starters such as Derek Anderson, Jimmy Ryerson, Nick Ostrom, Tom Nielson, Spencer Hazen, Erik Kariya, Young Park, Hi Hung, Brian Leddo, Nick Foster and pitching ace Eric Hagen. Head baseball coach Mark Potoshnik has declared a ban on players with "long hair", which is at odds with the public school's diversity goals. He has benched players for failing to register at the NW Baseball Academy where he is director. This hostile climate lead to a low freshmen turnout in 2007. The coaches failure to consider academic record during team selection lead to a raft of ineligible players during 2007.
