Location of Roosevelt Island

Roosevelt Island (79°25'S 162°00'W) is an ice-covered island, about 130 km long in a NW-SE direction, 65 km wide and about 7,500 km2 in area, lying in the E part of the Ross Ice Shelf of Antarctica. Its central ridge rises to about 550 m above sea level.


It was named by its discoverer R. Admiral Richard E. Byrd in 1934 for Franklin D. Roosevelt, then President of the United States.

The Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Association purchased the 91-acre (37-hectare), wooded island in 1932 with the intention of erecting a memorial honoring Roosevelt.
