Ross and Macdonald was one of Canada's most notable architecture firms in the early 20th century. Based in Montreal, Quebec, the firm originally operated as a partnership between George Allen Ross and David MacFarlane ("Ross and MacFarlane") from 1907 to 1912. MacFarlane retired in 1913, and Robert Henry Macdonald became a partner. The Honourable William Ross Macdonald, PC, OC, CD, QC (December 25, 1891 - May 28, 1976), served as the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1968 to 1974, and as Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons from 1949 to 1953.
Macdonald was born in Toronto, Ontario, to a dry goods merchant who had immigrated from Scotland.
Macdonald sought Liberal Party nomination to run for election to the Canadian House of Commons for the 1926 election, but lost the nomination by a single vote.
