Rossmoor is a census-designated place and an uncorporated area located in Montgomery County, Maryland. It is an area primarily inhabited by retirees, and includes the large retirement community of Leisure World.

Geography

As an unincorporated area, Rossmoor's boundaries are not officially defined. Rossmoor is, however, recognized by the United States Census Bureau as a Census-designated Place, and by the United States Geological Survey as a populated place located at 39°6'14" North, 77°4'16" West (39.103825, -77.070982)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the place has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 7,569 people, 4,857 households, and 1,792 families residing in the area. The population density is 2,681.1/km² (6,918.0/mi²). There are 5,347 housing units at an average density of 1,894.0/km² (4,887.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the area is 83.15% White, 11.57% African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.74% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.81% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. 4.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,857 households out of which 3.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.4% are married couples living together, 3.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 63.1% are non-families. 61.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 56.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.53 and the average family size is 2.33.

In the area the population is spread out with 5.2% under the age of 18, 1.8% from 18 to 24, 6.8% from 25 to 44, 9.7% from 45 to 64, and 76.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 77 years. For every 100 females there are 52.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 50.9 males.

The median income for a household in the area is $45,945, and the median income for a family is $63,773. Males have a median income of $54,408 versus $36,038 for females. The per capita income for the area is $37,761. 4.1% of the population and 1.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
