FACTOID # 77: Moldova has one of the smallest artillery forces in Europe, and the highest rate in the world of death by powered lawnmower. Coincidence? Surely not.

Encyclopedia > Rotary vane pump

A rotary vane pump is a positive displacement pump that consists of variable-length, tensioned vanes mounted to a rotor that rotates inside of a cavity. The most simple vane pump is a circular rotor rotating inside of a larger circular cavity. The centers of these two circles are offset, causing eccentricity. Vanes are allowed to slide into and out of the rotor and seal on all edges, creating vane chambers that do the pumping work. On the intake side of the pump, the vane chambers are increasing in volume. These increasing volume vane chambers are filled with fluid forced in by the inlet pressure. Often this inlet pressure is nothing more than pressure from the atmosphere. On the discharge side of the pump, the vane chambers are decreasing in volume, forcing fluid out of the pump. The action of the vane gradually drives out a volume of gas with each rotation, slowly reaching the required pressure -- about 10-2 Torr. Manual pump used to obtain water A pump is a mechanical device used to move liquids or gases. ... R0t0r is from efnet ... The torr (symbol: Torr) or millimetre of mercury (mmHg) is a non-SI unit of pressure. ...

Common uses of vane pumps include high pressure hydraulic pumps and automotive uses including power steering and automatic transmission pumps. Pumps for mid-range pressures include applications such as carbonators for fountain soft drink dispensers and espresso coffee machines. They are also often used as vacuum pumps for low-vacuum applications including evacuating refrigerant lines in air conditioners, and laboratory freeze dryers, and vacuum experiments in physics. Hydraulically powered cylinders are visible on this excavator. ... Power steering is a system for reducing the steering effort on cars by using an external power source to assist in turning the wheels. ... An automatic transmission is an automobile gearbox that can change gear ratios automatically as the car or truck moves, thus freeing the driver from having to shift gears manually. ... A vacuum pump is a pump that removes gas molecules from a sealed volume in order to leave behind a partial vacuum. ... Note: in the broadest sense, air conditioning can refer to any form of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning. ... Look up Vacuum in Wiktionary, the free dictionary For other uses, see vacuum (disambiguation) A vacuum is a volume of space that is empty of matter, including air, so that gaseous pressure is much less than standard atmospheric pressure. ...
