The series began with the 1982 Rough Guide to Greece, a book conceived by Mark Ellingham, who was dissatisfied with the polarisation of existing guidebooks between cost-obsessed student guides and "heavyweight cultural tomes".


Most of the early titles were written or edited by John Fisher, Jack Holland and Martin Dunford, who along with Mark Ellingham were co-founders and owners of Rough Guide series. Rough Guides on DEF II

In the late 1980s, the Rough Guides brand was 'spun-off' into a series of successful travel shows on BBC 2. Initially part of Janet Street Porter's DEF II strand, alongside Rapido and Jovanotti's Gimme 5, the show outlasted the 'yoof-tv' strand and became established in BBC 2's early 1990s evening schedule. Rough Guide has great information, a free-and-easy style, and some of the best travel suggestions for "off the beaten path" places of any guidebook series that I've found.
Rough Guides are for the most part geared towards budget travel.
Rough Guides doesn't do that, but it does focus on 2 and 3 star accommodations, cheap eats, and public transportation instead of luxury accommodations and flying or driving yourself.

Rough Guides was started in the 1980's, in England, by a small group of recent college grads who wanted to create a contemporary, journalistic alternative to the old-fashioned attitudes and approaches of traditional travel guides.
So with The Rough Guide to Greece, we (myself, my partner Natania Jansz, and John Fisher) were basically writing a book for ourselves, and one with a journalistic and quite a writerly approach.
Rough Guides score very high on our list of recommended travel guides, primarily for their first-class writing, strong attention to rail travel, great maps, and wide-ranging, well-informed coverage of the local scene.
