At one point, Route 37 was supposed to run from Trenton, New Jersey at the White Horse Circle to Seaside Heights, New Jersey. Several disjointed sections of Route 37 were built prior to 1990 in preparation for a proposed freeway extension. This was never built and Interstate 195 partially filled the gap. The median of Route 37 east of the Garden State Parkway is very wide for it's majority, a visible sign of excess right of way intended for a freeway.
