Roy Worters (October 19, 1900 in Toronto, Ontario - November 7, 1957) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played for the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Americans in the National Hockey League. Roy was the smallest player to play major league hockey. He stood only 5'2" and he certainly needed the protection his defence gave him.He was fortunate in this respect to have defencemen like Lionel Conacher,Bullet Joe Simpson and Red Dutton around. In 1928-29,Roy became the first goaltender to win the Hart Trophy,as he led the Americans to second place in the Canadian Division. He won the Vezina Trophy in 1930-31,but his Americans teammates were powerless to score any goals and they did not even make the playoffs that year. He continued to play well despite a defence that often left him on his own. In 1936-37, the Americans finally had the scorers,but by then Roy was over the hill and retired during the season. Roy Worters died of throat cancer on November 7th,1957. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969.
