The Royal Bank of Scotland (LSE: RBS (http://www.londonstockexchange.com/en-gb/pricesnews/prices/Trigger/genericsearch.htm?bsg=true&ns=RBS)) is one of Scotland's four national clearing banks and one of the oldest in the UK, founded in Edinburgh in 1727 by Royal Charter.


Today it is the largest bank in Scotland, the second largest in the UK and Europe, and the fifth largest in the world by market capitalisation. Its shares have a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange.


The bank's head office is in St Andrew's Square, Edinburgh. It has offices throughout Europe, America and Asia

The Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC is one of Scotland's three national clearing banks and one of the oldest in the UK, founded in Edinburgh in 1727 by Royal Charter.
Accordingly the "New Bank" was chartered in 1727 as the Royal Bank of Scotland.
In August 2005 Royal Bank of Scotland purchased a 5% stake in the Bank of China.

The Bank was incorporated in England in 1968 and was formed from the merger of National Provincial Bank Limited and Westminster Bank Limited, which had themselves been formed through a series of mergers involving banks with origins dating back to the 17th century.
National Westminster Bank Plc was acquired by The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc on 6 March 2000 and since then it has operated and been managed as a member of the overall RBS Group.
Banks are required to set out their policy on "large exposures" and to inform the FSA of this.
