Trivia

  • Rey Mysterio broke the record for lasting the longest in a Royal Rumble match by lasting 1:02:28. The previous record was 1:01:37, made by Chris Benoit at the 2004 Royal Rumble.
  • Rey Mysterio became the first superstar in WWE history under 200 pounds to ever win the Royal Rumble, as well as the first masked superstar to win.
  • Kane made his tenth appearance in a Royal Rumble match, tying the record for most Royal Rumble appearances with Rikishi. It also marked his eighth consecutive appearance in the Royal Rumble as Kane, breaking the previous record of seven consecutive appearances held by himself, Owen Hart and Rick Martel.
  • This was the first Royal Rumble event since 1998 where the Royal Rumble match itself was not the final match on the card.
  • During the Rumble match, Shane McMahon came in and eliminated Shawn Michaels after being distracted by Vince McMahon. This marked the second consecutive year that Michaels was eliminated by somebody other than a qualified participant. In 2005, he was eliminated by Kurt Angle after eliminating Angle earlier.
  • In the Royal Rumble match, one of the announcers said that Rob Van Dam made his Royal Rumble debut in 2003 and lasted over a half-hour. However, that is not true because Rob Van Dam made his Royal Rumble debut in 2002.
  • Ten years after his first Royal Rumble in 1996 at #1, Triple H was once again in the #1 entry slot.
  • Rey Mysterio was the second person to win the Royal Rumble match starting from #2. The first being Vince McMahon. Even though both men won, they would surrender or lose their title opportunites. McMahon surrender to Austin, Mysterio to Randy Orton. However, Mysterio was granted a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship due to Teddy Long being disgusted at Orton cheating to win that match.
  • Ironically, the last 3 contestants in the Royal Rumble went on to challenge their brand's champion for the title at WrestleMania 22. Triple H took on John Cena for the WWE Championship and both Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio took on Kurt Angle for the World Heavyweight Championship in a Triple Threat Match. Mysterio was the only successful one, winning the title after a West Coast Pop to Orton. A simular situation occurred the previous year, when the last two participants, Batista and John Cena, would go on to face the World Heavyweight Champion and WWE Champion, respectively.
  • Triple H participated in the Royal Rumble Match for the first time since 2002.
  • With John Cena defeating Edge to regain the WWE Championship, the 2006 edition of the Royal Rumble was the first time since the 1999 Royal Rumble that the WWE Championship changed hands. At that year's "Rumble" The Rock defeated Mankind in an "I Quit" Match. The World Heavyweight Championship has never changed hands at the Royal Rumble.
  • This event marked the first time that two former Olympians battled for a world title in the WWE, (Mark Henry and Kurt Angle).
