Encyclopedia > Royal Swedish Society of Naval Sciences

The Royal Swedish Society of Naval Sciences or Kungl. Örlogsmannasällskapet, founded in 1771 by King Gustav III, is one of the Royal Academies in Sweden. The Society is an independent organization and a forum for navy and defence issues. Fellowship is limited to 120 chairs under the age of 60.

The purpose of the Royal Society of Naval Sciences is to follow and promote the development of the naval sciences and of maritime matters in general, and thereby further that which is of benefit to the Nation.
During this period the activities of the Society were severely curtailed and in all probability it would have been disbanded had not Otto Henrik Nordenskiöld succeed in convincing the Society to hold fast in its decision to move to Karlskrona.
At the end of the 19th century the administration of the admirality was renewed and the referendum to the Society came to an end as well as public affairs with the Minister of the Navy.
