History

In 1871 21 English clubs met at a London hostelry to form the Rugby Football Union (RFU), which would draw up rules for the game first played at Rugby school in 1823. There would have been 22, but the Wasps' representative never reached that inaugural meeting. Director of Elite Rugby

In response to the faltering results of the England National Team on August 18 2006 Rob Andrew was appointed by the RFU to undertake the post of Director of Elite Rugby to oversee all aspects of representative rugby in England, from the regional academies to the full senior side, including senior team selection powers and the power to hire and fire coaches at all levels of English rugby. Rob also has the task of building bridges with the premiership clubs and the RFU in terms of players withdrawal from their club duties for international duties.     Football hooliganism isn’t a new thing: during a match in Derby in 1846, two squads of soldiers had to be called in to deal with a disorderly crowd.
    The majority of people attending football matches are, of course, well-behaved; it’s the actions of a few – and it’s probably a misnomer to call them football supporters - that have led to the perceived view of football fans as aggressive, narrow-minded hooligans.
    During football matches, no alcohol can be consumed in the stadium but during rugby games, spectators are allowed – and are happy to miss bits of the action - to visit the bar to top up their pints to take back to their seats.

    Rugby union is also related to rugby sevens, which the game's governing body the IRB also runs, as well as American football and Canadian football, which are directly descended from rugby football.
