Cities throughout the world bid to host the Olympic Games and there is always keen competition, firstly between cities within each country who would like to be considered as potential hosts, and then internationally between the successful cities.
Once bids have been accepted there is a process of elimination by the International Olympic Committee, over a period of years, with the number of bidding cities gradually being whittled down until a winner is declared - some seven years prior to the olympiad in question.
The Olympic Games Bid Procedure is quite a long, demanding and often nerve racking process.

The Games of the VIII Olympiad were held in 1924 in Paris, France.
The marathon distance was fixed at 42.195 km, from the distance run at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London.
Originally called Semaine des Sports d'Hiver ("International Winter Sports Week") and held in association with the 1924 Summer Olympics, the sports competitions held in Chamonix between 25 January and 5 February 1924 were later designated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the I Olympic Winter Games.
