The chain was axed by Thorn EMI earlier this month and most stores have been in the process of closing over the last few weeks.
No one is talking about the price paid for the Rumbelows chain, but media sources suggest figures well into the tens of millions of pounds, a figure that Escom can afford, as its main investor is Siemens-Nixdorf, the German technology giant.
The move came at the last minute for Rumbelows, which was up for grabs from Thorn EMI, the British technology group, which had set itself a self-imposed deadline of the end of April to sell the 285 strong chain of stores.
