Miscellanea

  • This release is somewhat notable for being the first official live Rush release not following their established pattern of releasing 4 studio albums in between live albums.
  • It should also be noted that this is the first time a complete Rush concert has been released on CD, from start to finish, without adding or taking out songs. (As well as being the first live CD and DVD where Neil's drum solo was done in its entirety.)
  • It also has bonus soundboard "bootleg" tracks that were alternate songs from those played that night in Rio (however, only one song played on this tour isn't on this disc, "Ceiling Unlimited" from Vapor Trails).
  • Furthermore, at this concert, Rush played to its second* largest crowd as a headliner (40,000)*. Their largest** crowd was the previous night (60,000), in São Paulo. *Rush headlined the then annual "Texas Jam" in Dallas in 1984, that years attendance was above 40,000. **They had also headlined there at "The Cotton Bowl" stadium in Dallas Texas for a much larger crowd in August/1979 just before recording their Permanent Waves album, that event was called the "Summer Blowout".
  • It is also noted that this show was recorded without either a sound or video check, as the crew had such a hard time driving from Sao Paulo to Rio De Janeiro that they were hours late when they finally arrived, and by the time they finally had everything set up, the crowd was filing in.
  • After this show, Neil's rotating drum riser was destroyed when it was being removed from the stadium by a flat-bed truck whose driver miscalculated the height of the exit.
  • Rush was nominated for a Best Rock Instrumental Performance Grammy Award in 2005 for Neil Peart's drum solo, “O Baterista” (Portuguese for The Drummer) from this album, but they lost to Brian Wilson's "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow".

Rush In Rio DVD review (0 words)
Other than The Police, Rush is probably the most famous and respected power trio in all of rock and roll, but on the night of November 23, 2002, during the final show of the Vapor Trails tour at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Rush had about 40,000 extra members in the band.
All Rush fans are aware of the tragedies drummer Neil Peart suffered five years ago, with the loss of both his 19-year-old daughter (in a car accident) and wife (from cancer) in a span of one year.
Rush has a few video collections from previous tours and a video collection of some of their music videos, but this is by far the best representation of the complete live Rush experience from start to end and everything in between.
