Russell Gardens is a village located in Nassau County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,074.


Geography

Russell Gardens is located at 40°46'52" North, 73°43'30" West (40.781063, -73.724996)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,074 people, 400 households, and 296 families residing in the village. The population density is 2,303.7/km² (5,865.0/mi²). There are 409 housing units at an average density of 877.3/km² (2,233.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 85.94% White, 0.56% African American, 0.09% Native American, 10.61% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 5.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 400 households out of which 39.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.5% are married couples living together, 4.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% are non-families. 24.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.19.


In the village the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 3.9% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 102.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.0 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $108,427, and the median income for a family is $142,636. Males have a median income of $100,000 versus $56,250 for females. The per capita income for the village is $58,680. 3.7% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.0% of those under the age of 18 and 13.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Russell is descended from some of the area's earliest settlers and entrepreneurs; two of her great-grandfathers were ministers who worked in and around Wilmington, and another ancestor was one of the founders of the Carolina Yacht Club at Wrightsville Beach, owner of a pier at the Wilmington docks and part owner of Airlie Gardens.

Russell Varian was a Fellow of the Institute of Radio Engineers (now the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the American Physical Society, and the California Academy of Sciences, and served as Director of the West Coast Electronic ManufacturersÂ’ Association.
Russell, as was his nature, forgot about his heart condition and pitched in to save the boat, which was caught in a riptide, from crashing into the dock.
