The Russian Space Forces is the department of Ministry of Defence of Russian Federation. The main tasks of Russian Space Forces are:

  • informing the higher political leaders and military commanders about missile attack as soon as possible;
  • anti-missile defence;
  • creation, deployment, maintenance and control of in-orbit group of space vehicles.

Russian space agency, Roskosmos, poured cold shower on the lunar dreams of its main contractor in the manned space flight Wednesday, as the agency itself struggled to formulate its space policy in the next decade.
According to the Russian space agency, Roskosmos, the glitch could be caused by a recent change in the configuration of the outpost after the previous Shuttle assembly mission in September 2006.
Onboard were Russian cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov, NASA astronaut Jeffrey Williams, both from Expedition 13, and American businesswoman Anousheh Ansari, who arrived to the station on September 20, 2006, onboard Soyuz TMA-9, as a space tourist.

Remaining three satellites onboard the rocket belonged to the Russian Ministry of Defense and in an accordance with the standard practice for the military spacecraft were identified as Cosmos-2384, -2385 and -2386.
Statements made by the Russian space officials confirmed that the payload belonged to the Araks (Arkon) family of spacecraft developed by NPO Lavochkin.
According to Russian Space Forces, a four-stage Molniya-M rocket with Block ML upper stage blasted off at midnight Moscow Time on June 20, 2003, carrying a 1,600-kilogram Molniya-type spacecraft, apparently its newest Molniya-3 version based on a Molniya-2M (11F637) platform.
