Encyclopedia > Rusty Kane

Rusty Kane is a New Zealand political candidate and activist. He is leader of the People's Choice Party, which placed 21st among registered parties in the 1999 elections. Kane also contested the New Plymouth electorate under the People's Choice banner. In the 2002 elections, Kane stood as an independent in the Taranaki-King Country seat, and he was also one of six candidates to contest the Te Tai Hauauru by-election in 2004. His campaign in Te Tai Hauauru was based on the abolition of the Maori seats, and he placed last. He has also sought election to the Taranaki Regional Council — he has been somewhat more successful here, but not to the point of winning a seat. Kane says that in the 2005 elections, he intends to challenge New Plymouth MP Harry Duynhoven, despite the fact that Duynhoven has the largest majority in the country.
