São José (Portuguese for Saint Joseph) is a parish in the district of Ponta Delgada in the Azores. The population in 2001 is 8,627, its density is 2,217/km² and the area is 3.89 km². It is the largest parish in Ponta Delgada in population and density and is part of the downtown area of Ponta Delgada. In July 2002, the parish of Santa Clara separated from São José. Much of the area are urbanized. The mountains lie to the northwest while the rest of the land are flatlands.
