The island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe held presidential elections on 30 June 1996. It was the nation's second presidential election since the introduction of multi-party politics in 1990. No candidate won a majority of votes in the first round, and a second round was held on 21 July between the two leading candidates - Trovoada and da Costa.
