Professor Shunmugam Jayakumar (born August 12, 1939) is the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Law of Singapore since 12 August 2004. He is known officially as S Jayakumar. He is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bedok Constituency in the East Coast GRC. He was the foreign minister of Singapore from 1994 to 2004. He studied in Raffles Institution and University of Singapore where he graduated with a Bachelor of Law (Honours) degree. He was admitted to the Bar in 1964. He later received his Master of Law in Yale Law School and taught at the Faculty of Law in the National University of Singapore. He became the Dean of the Law Faculty in 1974. From 1971 to 1974, he served as Singapore's Permenent Representative to the United Nation and High Commissioner to Canada.
