History Opened officially in 1998, the school has improved tremendously, with only 375 students when it first opened, numbers tripled and now the school has more than 1500 students enrolled. It was the first secondary school to be opened in Bandar Utama. It has had three headmistresses including the current one, to date.
Administration The current headmistress is assisted by the Head of Student Affairs, Head of Co-curriculum, supervisors, and the Heads of departments. There are roughly 80 teachers in the school, in both the afternoon and morning session. Teachers are assisted by the prefect board, which has more than 100 prefects in it including current probationary prefects.
Academics
Co-curriculum SMK Bandar Utama is highly active and participates in various competitions and activities. The most prominent product of the school is its athletes. Each time they participate, they never come back empty-handed. Holding the title of Overall winner three years in a row for the Cross-country Championship of the Petaling District, SMK Bandar Utama athletes such as Shanti Armom, Arivinthakumar and Sathiaraj Rajoo have been representatives of the Petaling District and State of Selangor. SMK Bandar Utama, under the Kelab Ikan Hiasan dan Tumbuhan Akuatik, participated as well in the Pertandingan Menghias Akuarium Peringkat Negeri Selangor in 2001 and 2002. The club won 1st place in both years and received prizes, which include cash, aquarium paraphernalia and certificates. The first competition was held in front of the Blue Wave Hotel, Shah Alam and the 2nd competition was held in Quality Hotel, also in Shah Alam. In their 1st competition in 2001, the aquarium arrangement was named Alam Tropika to depict the beauty and uniqueness of Malaysian tropical forest. In 2002, they chose the name Sanggar Tropikarium for their aquarium arrangement to portray the art of decorating aquarium with natural produce. 4 of the most noted students who represented the club in both of the competitions were Mahathir Mustaffa, Abdul Subhan Mahfooz, Syamsul Anuar Yusril & Mohd Faizal Mokhtar, all of whom were from class of 2003.
Each year, the Domino's Pizza Safety Rodeo holds its safety rodeo in SMK Bandar Utama. Yet to be held this year, the safety rodeo holds various competitions, games and provides pizzas to students, to increase safety awareness on roads. Last year, SMK Bandar Utama participated in KBU college's Teacher's Day Celebration. With the persuasion and constant support from headmistress Puan Chan Sim Ai, the school choir and teacher's choir, made up of the SMKBU teaching staff, sang at KBU, lead by music teacher; Mr Eugene. Recently in early 2007, the school's debate team beat rival schools SMK Bandar Utama Damansara 4 and SMK Damansara Jaya in the Tan Sri Datuk Wira Abdul Rahman Arshad cup; in the first and second rounds. Third speaker Michelle was named Best Speaker during the second round. In the Taylor's College Annual Inter-School debate, first speaker Nicholas was named Best Speaker. The debate team; which consists of a Chinese (Nicholas), Sino-malay (Sarah) and Indian (Michelle) coincidentally reflect upon the school's large multi-racial and cultural mix among students. For Perbahasan (Malay Language debate), the school team got through the first and second rounds as well.
The school drama team landed third place at the recent Drama Competition for the Damansara zone, beating most of their highly-competitive rival schools. Despite this being their first competition ever and only a week's worth of practice due to certain reasons, they gained the approval of judges and got third place with their comedy; The Poser Dilemma. Their most popular character was a LaLa girl, played by form 4 student Yehga Nikkil which almost won the Best Actor award. According to the director, she had to bribe them with food to practice. And when she left the team to practice under the supervision of a senior, the team played Pepsi-Cola instead of practicing.

2007 was yet another great year for the SMKBU Scrabble Teams. On March, both the Under-18 (Represented by Rizal bin Zainal Abidin, Alwin Low Tah Yung, Nicholas Cheong Howe Wern, and Muhammad Faris bin Zaidi) and Under-15 (Represented by Abigail, Shaun, Weng Shui, and Michelle Paulson) teams emerged as runner-ups in the preliminary round of the inter-school Scrabble Tournament, thus qualifying for the Zone Level Inter-school Scrabble Tournament. The Under-18 team were 1 win short of getting to the state level, and had to settle for 3rd place. The Under-15 team, however, got owned.
SMK Bandar Utama participated as well in the Pertandingan 3K. The 3 Ks stand for Kebersihan (cleanliness), Keselamatan (safety), and Keceriaan (cheerfulness?). SMK Bandar Utama won in the Kebersihan and Keselamatan categories, and became representatives of the Petaling District.
Others The Prefect Board 2006/2007 of SMK Bandar Utama is currently being led by head prefect Kamarul Ahmatand his two assistants that is Heng Sie Kee and Muhammad Faris bin Zaidi, and will be taken over by the new Prefect Board of 2007/2008, which is still in the process of selecting its committee. The board has the school's discipline teachers as advisors. The prefects' uniform follows the school's theme colour; green.
There are more than 50 school librarians in SMK Bandar Utama, made up of students. Led by the head librarian and teacher advisors. The librarians' uniform is grey.
SMK Bandar Utama's editorial board; JU, produces the annual school yearbook. Named Jejak Utama, it started in 2000 and produced its 6th Edition last year, led by then-editor; Tan Ka Huey. This year's JU team is led by editor Casandra Lee, a senior.
