X 2800 class numbered 119 units and were introduced from 1958.
X 2200 units were delivered, nearly identical to the X 2100 class except for the 1st class compartment now moved away from the motor.  X2100, X2200 and X2800 were couplable together and could all form trains with trailors, a flexible solution to operating variables.
The second new generation railcar was designed to continue the replacement of older units like X 4300 and the remaining X 2800 series.  This was a single body railcar with 514kW underfloor motor, air-conditioning, semi-panoramic windows and several open compartiments for a total of 79 seats.  A top speed of 140kph.

The SNCF numbering system for electric and diesel locomotives confuses a number of people, and in past Journals locos have sometimes been mis-identified or completely bogus numbers quoted.
The progression from the low-powered classes (C61000) to the highest (CC72000 and now BB 75000) is probably not due to any conscious decision, but the result of the shunters and 'road-switchers' being developed first: the distinctly low-regime BB 71000 'pedalos' were sandwiched between the high-powered prototypes CC 70001/2 and the definitive CC 72000.
Hence (X) 72500 and 73500, the TER diesel units.
