Sack conducted exclusive interviews with First Lieutenant William L. Calley, Jr., the one man who would be convicted of the massacre of civilians in the village of Mylai, Vietnam, for an Esquire cover story titled "The Confessions of Lieutenant Calley," a story that made both Mr.
Sack was subsequently arrested and indicted on federal felony charges for refusing to testify and refusing to deliver evidence.
Sack's last piece for Esquire was his account of Operation Anaconda, one of the most dramatic battles of the war in Afghanistan, which was published in August 2002.
