Sagami Bay (相模湾, Sagami-wan), also known as the Sagami Gulf or Sagami Sea, lies south of Kanagawa Prefecture in Honshu, central Japan, with the Miura Peninsula to its east and the Izu Peninsula to its west. It lies approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) southwest of the capital, Tokyo.
A branch of the warm Kuroshiro (Black Current) warms the bay, allowing it to host marine organisms typical of more southerly regions and giving a mild climate to the land bordering the bay. The maximum depth of the bay is about 700 meters.
SAGAMIWAN, 27 August 1945 Ira Allen, CWT of Los Angeles, CA, wore the same four leaf clover he had around his neck during the Battle of Kula Gulf.
A few minutes later, orders were received to put the rest of the pilots and interpreters on other destroyers for transfer to various ships in the task force.
Then, with Nicholas and the Missouri in the lead followed closely by the Iowa and the King George V and a screen of cans and APDs, the advance portion of the Third Fleet steamed swiftly into SagamiWan, the lower entrance of Tokyo Bay.
She refitted at Guam between 13 February and 15 March 1945, called at Saipan, and sailed 16 March for her second war patrol.
Assigned to the area between SagamiWan and the northern Nanpo Shoto, Devilfish was attacked by a kamikaze plane on 20 March 1945 before she entered her patrol area.
The plane crashed her as the submarine was submerging, destroying the mast structure and causing serious leakage.
