Encyclopedia > Sagtikos State Parkway

The Sagtikos State Parkway is a 4.9 mile north-south parkway on Long Island New York and part of New York State Reference Route 908K--the Sunken Meadow State Parkway is the other part. Since the highway is part of the New York State Parkway System, commerical vehicles are restricted from using the freeway-standard highway. Aside from being a part of the New York State Highway System, it's also a Long Island Parkway, and, thus, carries the white-on-black Long Island parkway shield. The parkway was opened in September, 1952 at a cost of $8 million and closed the highway loop on Long Island. At its southern end, the Sagtikos meets the Southern State Parkway several feet from the Robert Moses Causeway interchange.
