St. James is a city located in Watonwan County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,695. It is the county seat of Watonwan County6.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.87% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,695 people, 1,845 households, and 1,186 families residing in the city. The population density is 791.6/km² (2,050.3/mi²). There are 2,006 housing units at an average density of 338.2/km² (876.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.24% White, 0.40% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 14.27% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 23.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,845 households out of which 32.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.16.


In the city the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $33,196, and the median income for a family is $40,993. Males have a median income of $30,036 versus $19,391 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,336. 10.8% of the population and 9.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.5% of those under the age of 18 and 9.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
