Salem is a common name for towns and places, particularly in the Western world. In ancient times it was the name of a locality in the Near East (Palestine), and traditionally identified with Jerusalem, before the name "Jerusalem" was used. It is mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 14:18, in connection with the figure Melchizedek, typically translated "King of Salem" which means "King of Peace".
