Salem is a census-designated place located in Adair County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 89.


Geography

Salem is located at 35°46'2" North, 94°34'29" West (35.767208, -94.574614)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.6 km˛ (3.3 mi˛). 8.6 km˛ (3.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 89 people, 40 households, and 26 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 10.4/km˛ (26.8/mi˛). There are 46 housing units at an average density of 5.3/km˛ (13.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 49.44% White, 0.00% African American, 42.70% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 7.87% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 40 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.5% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 32.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.81.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 21.3% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 29.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 78.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.2 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $21,875, and the median income for a family is $20,625. Males have a median income of $10,000 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $7,281. 34.3% of the population and 35.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.5% of those under the age of 18 and 28.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
