Saltsburg is a borough located in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 955.


Geography

Saltsburg is located at 40°29'9" North, 79°26'52" West (40.485731, -79.447726)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛). 0.5 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 16.67% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 955 people, 406 households, and 261 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,755.8/km˛ (4,628.9/mi˛). There are 445 housing units at an average density of 818.2/km˛ (2,156.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 99.16% White, 0.21% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 406 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.97.


In the borough the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.2 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $27,448, and the median income for a family is $37,614. Males have a median income of $32,778 versus $24,688 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $14,580. 12.7% of the population and 11.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.7% of those under the age of 18 and 11.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
