Sam was the foster child of Bobby Simpson, who later fell in love with Sam's father, Greg and they eventually married and Bobby adopted Sam. In 1993, Sam's world was cruelly ripped apart when Bobby died after a boating accident caused by family friend Adam Cameron. Sam was later fostered by Pippa and Michael Ross and had minimal contact with Greg for several years. Sam was generally happy with the Rosses but tragedy struck in 1996, after Michael was swept away during a flood trying to rescue Sam.
